We like to think people judge us on our intentions; while the truth is more realistic. They can only judge us on what they see; what we present to them. In many aspects of our lives this is true, but none more so than the workplace. Face it, your employer or customer is looking to you to represent them. Do you exude confidence, positive attitude, an upbeat, well-groomed appearance? These attributes and characteristics do impress your boss, prospective employer or customer!

So what happens when you are pooped, down or overwhelmed and you come to work dressed or groomed poorly, feeling miserable or gossiping to get that little thrill of “feeling better” at the expense of others? Well generally there are at least two things that happen. You have a less favorable opinion of the world and people – thereby depressing yourself; and two, your boss, employer or customer subtly think you are a drag.

To create a good impression on people at work (and for that matter anywhere at home or with friends) try acting better than you feel. Try being nice to people close and even strangers when you don’t feel good. Practice the old adage “fake it ’til you make it.” Take the extra time to go to work prepared by wearing neat clothes, your makeup or a pressed and tucked shirt. These acts will place in the minds of others, your tidiness and care. These positive impressions are embedded in their unconscious and conscious minds as well as in yours.

If you want to be a confident, happy, successful individual, start acting that way. Start dressing and talking that way. Let others see that even if life is tough or you are faced with challenges, you care about yourself, your appearance and create a positive environment around you. Team members such as these are sought by employers and will rise inside organizations. If that is not the case – take a good inventory of yourself along these lines and clean up your side of the street.

Finally, confidence is not a scam or a con. It has everything to do with what we believe and then project – and how we include others in the good. A true winner shares their upbeat confidence with their team mates. Even if struggling with personal problems, this individual exudes self-care and the ability to rise above grievances, resentments or life’s invariable unfairnesses.

Create good and beauty where there is little. Be the light for others by acting and looking better than you may feel. At the same time you will train your mind and spirit that you can rise above difficulty and indeed you have what it takes.

Whether big or small, we’d like to hear your entrepreneurial stories from southeastern New Mexico. Kindly submit 300-400 words. Questions also welcome. Send to Marianne@ruidosofreepress.com.
